This document (digital download) provides details on what protocols to follow to test running economy in different racing shoes. To do this testing, you will need access to a metabolic cart, a device used to measure oxygen consumption and energy expenditure. These devices are often available in private sport performance testing facilities and university exercise science laboratories for a testing fee.
Most labs with a metabolic cart are accustomed to using the equipment to test an individual's maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max). However, they may be less experienced using such equipment for running economy shoe testing. This guide provides a template to follow for such testing. The best way to do this is contact a lab facility directly and ask if they have a metabolic cart and if they could offer fee-based testing for a custom protocol. This document provides recommendations on how to contact a facility, the protocol guidelines to follow, and recommendations on the interpretation and analysis.
Separate note: If you are in the Austin, TX area or passing through, my lab offers testing services such as these at very affordable rates. Feel free to reach out if you are interested.
