Puma Deviate Nitro Elite

I tested my running economy in Puma Deviate Nitro Elite, the shoe Molly Seidel wore in her Bronze medal marathon run in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Testing Methods

For this case study comparison I looked at the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite, the Nike Alphafly, and my traditional control shoe (Asics Hyper Speed) for two reps each at 6:15/mile pace. Check out this link to see what running economy is, how it is measured, and how it impacts performance.

Results

My running economy was improved by 2.6% in the Puma shoe relative to the control, but fell short of the benefits offered by the Nike Alphafly (4.3%).

Take Home Message

Overall, I like the Nitro Elite. The foam feels responsive, I just wish there was a lot more of it. For point of comparison, I’m my usual ~4-4.5% better in the Alphafly, but only have a 2.6% reduction in VO2 for the Nitro Elite. This is pretty comparable to what I am in the Asics Metaspeed Sky, so it seems like a legit shoe from that perspective, just doesn’t quite match up to my big Alphafly ZoomX responsiveness.
