Asics Metaspeed Sky +

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

I tested my running economy in the Asics Metaspeed Sky +, the original Asics Metaspeed, and the Nike Alphafly.

Testing Methods

I ran in each shoe as well as my typical control shoe (Asics Hyperspeed) for two reps each at 6:20/mile pace while measuring oxygen consumption and energy expenditure. Check out this link to see what running economy is, how it is measured, and how it impacts performance.

Results

The Metaspeed Sky + gave me a similar running economy benefit (~2.7%) as the OG Metaspeed Sky. As usual, I included the Alphafly in the testing lineup for point of reference and got my typical ~4% benefit from it. From our Super Shoe Study, we saw the Metaspeed Sky perform similar as the Alphafly on average across the group of 12 runners we tested, but I am a larger responder to the Alphafly so it still reigns supreme for me personally.

Take Home Message

I do love the Metaspeed Sky however, and find myself wishing I ran in them more often. As for the Metaspeed Sky vs. Sky +, I actually prefer the feel/ride of the original although the running economy data seems like a wash between the two for me. Fit-wise, I think the new Sky + fits more true to size and doesn’t need ½ size up like some have preferred with the original Metaspeed Sky.
